Whether medication is necessary is a decision best left to you and your doctor. However, there are some circumstances when medication is often, if not always recommended. Mental illness is considered severe when the symptoms the person is experiencing are highly distressing and the individual is struggling to function in day-to-day life. Sometimes “talk” therapy, also known as psychotherapy, is all that is required to get the symptoms under control and life back to normal. However, when the illness is severe, when suicidal thoughts are present, or when symptoms make it impossible to live safety and comfortably in society, medication is often necessary.
