Why did this happen to me?

There are many reasons why an individual develops mental illness, and they are different for every person. There are biological reasons, psychological reasons, and social reasons and all three are important. Again, no one is to blame when a mental illness develops, particularly the person how is ill. Examples of important reasons for developing mental illness include:

Biological reasons – family history (genetics), problems with specific parts of the brain, the balance of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters)

Psychological reasons – how you cope with stress, a background of abuse or other traumatic events, long-standing life stressors

Social reasons – family problems, like problems in a marriage or with children; poverty, lack of housing, inadequate support
