Both antidepressants and antianxiety medications are used to treat chronic anxiety disorders. The broad-spectrum activity of most antidepressants is effective for chronic anxiety as well as depression. Medications for chronic anxiety include: SNRIs, some SSRIs and agents that act on the neurotransmitter dopamine.
Benzodiazepines, another category of drugs, can also be used to relieve symptoms of chronic anxiety. They are short acting and there’s a potential for drug dependence and abuse.
