For some patients, medications can be an important element in the treatment of their depression and chronic anxiety. They’re commonly referred to as antidepressant or antianxiety medications.

It’s believed that some people with depression and anxiety may have an imbalance in certain naturally occurring brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. The levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine are considered to cause the symptoms of depression and chronic anxiety. Some of these may affect one neurotransmitter, while others may affect more than one neurotransmitter. Still other types of medications work in different ways. As always, talking to your doctor early on is the best way to find the treatment that’s appropriate for you.
